Certification with ALTA Best Practices

As a result of amendments to the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (Regulation X), banks and mortgage lenders have been required to ensure that consumers' non-public, personal information is protected from unauthorized disclosure. In response, the American Land Title Association (ALTA) created its Best Practices, a framework of seven elements designed to assist title companies to provide assurance to lenders that its customer's private information is protected.

In addition to establishing these best practices, ALTA recommended that title companies obtain a certification from an independent third party "certifying" that a title company has documented policies and procedures covering all of the best practices, and that the title company is, in fact, complying with its written policies and procedures
